Median heel stack is 37 mm across 83 models with verified stack in the current eligible set. This is a snapshot — not a claim about year-over-year change.
Sample: 83 of 85 eligible product models · unit: product model · metric: heel stack (mm)
Where heel stack sits today. Median 37 mm. Under 32 mm: 11, 32–36 mm: 29, 37–40 mm: 37, 41 mm+: 6.
Median weight is 275 g (mean 263.9 g) among models with verified weight. Lighter and heavier cohorts are both present — the chart shows the spread, not a single “ideal” shoe.
Sample: 85 of 85 eligible product models · unit: g
How shoe weight is distributed. Median 275 g. Under 220 g: 12, 220–260 g: 21, 260–300 g: 42, 300 g+: 10.
Median drop is 8 mm. Drop is geometry, not a performance score — runners still choose based on feel and injury history.
Sample: 83 of 85 eligible product models · unit: mm
Heel-to-toe drop across the catalog. Median 8 mm. 0 mm: 4, 1–4 mm: 4, 5–8 mm: 58, 9+ mm: 17.
Median verified offer is €150 among priced models. These are current lowest verified regional offers — not launch/MSRP (no canonical launch price field exists).
Sample: 85 of 85 eligible product models · default-region verified offers (EUR)
Where verified offer prices land. Median 150 EUR. Under €120: 3, €120–160: 54, €160–200: 18, €200+: 10.

Dataset eligibility: every insight uses the same Running Shoe Database cohort as /running/shoes/database — published, launch-listable product models with authentic media. Draft, held, blocked and media-gated products are excluded.
Unit of analysis: one Kitletics product model equals one database record. Men’s and women’s ProductVariant rows are not counted as separate models, so averages are not double-counted across gender variants unless a calculator explicitly states otherwise.
Missing values: unknown specs and prices are omitted from averages and rankings. They are never treated as zero. Each statistic publishes sampleSize, populationSize and coverage so “average weight across 80 shoes with verified weight” is distinguishable from implying every shoe has that field.
Quality gate: SUSPECT and INVALID field values (impossible weights, negative drop, heel/forefoot/drop inconsistency, price outliers, unit-confusion flags, etc.) are excluded from market insights and Data Explorer charts. They are never silently corrected. PARTIAL records may still contribute metrics whose individual field status is valid. See docs/data-products/RUNNING-SHOE-DATABASE-QUALITY.md.
Weight: grams as stored on the product specification (product-level figure used by the database record). Units are not mixed.
Price basis: lowest verified offer in the site default region (typically EUR). There is no canonical launch/MSRP field in the catalog, so brand price averages use current verified offers — labelled accordingly, not as launch price.
Brand sample thresholds: a brand must contribute at least 3 models with the relevant metric before it appears in ranked brand comparisons. Smaller samples remain available with their n for transparency but are not ranked as market leaders.
Best Kitletics value under €150: ranks models with verified offer ≤ €150 by Product.valueScore. Affiliate commission and retailer payout are never used.
Update mechanism: insights are computed at request/build time from the live eligible catalog. When the catalog changes, the next page render recalculates — there is no separately authored statistics content file.
For journalists & researchers
85 current running shoes · 15 brands · citation version 2026.09. Not a peer-reviewed academic dataset — a structured Kitletics catalog extract for transparent reporting.
A “Dataset updated” date is shown only when Kitletics records an intentional refresh stamp. Deploy time is never used as a freshness claim.
This dataset is the public Running Shoe Database view of Kitletics’ running-shoe catalog: 85 current product models across 15 brands. It powers the explorer and charts on this page and is derived from the same product records used on product pages, reviews and finders — not a parallel spreadsheet.
A shoe appears only when it is published, launch-listable under Kitletics’ Running publication policy, and has authentic product media. Draft, held, blocked and media-gated products are excluded. Counts above use that eligible cohort.
Weight, stack, drop, plate status, cushioning, terrain and related fields come from the product’s stored specifications (manufacturer / verified catalog research). Values are shown only when present on that product record.
Missing specs and prices are left blank. They are never treated as zero and never inferred from peers, previous generations or marketing copy. Charts and averages publish sample size and coverage so gaps stay visible.
The unit of analysis is one Kitletics product model. Men’s and women’s ProductVariant rows are not counted as separate models, so market averages are not double-counted across gender cuts unless a calculator explicitly says otherwise.
The page recalculates from the live eligible catalog when content changes. Citation version labels are bumped only when we intentionally refresh the public dataset stamp — not on every deploy. Historical year-trend claims are withheld until release-year coverage meets published thresholds.
Prices shown in the explorer are the lowest verified offer in the site default region (NL), when a displayable offer exists. That is not launch/MSRP — Kitletics does not currently store a canonical launch-price field for most shoes.
Recommended sort and Kitletics scores use editorial recommendation logic. Affiliate commission and retailer payout never determine ranking or inclusion.
Some retailer links elsewhere on Kitletics may be affiliate links. Commission does not change which shoes appear in this database or how they are sorted. Affiliate disclosure.

Data credibility matters more than pretending the catalog is perfect. Tell us the product URL and what looks wrong — we use corrections to improve the shared catalog.

Methodology
Every row is derived from the same Kitletics product catalog that powers product pages, reviews and finders — not a parallel spreadsheet.
Shoes appear only when they pass the Running launch publication policy: published status, authentic product media, and launch-listable eligibility. Draft, held, blocked and media-gated products are excluded.
Specifications such as weight, stack, drop, cushioning and plate status are shown only when present on the product record. Missing values are left blank — we do not infer specs from peers or marketing copy.
Recommended sort uses Kitletics recommendation scores — never affiliate commission or retailer payout. Prices reflect the lowest verified offer in the default region when available.
